For this years last event in the iDEAS:lab, the
Bundesrealgymnasium Linz took the opportunity for a visit in our science lab. The
programme for the participants was designed to provide two different modules.
The students became acquainted with the positioning via GPS technology and its different
applications referring to navigation. Practical training was offered outside by
receiving different points with GPS-Apps by the students themselves.
Furthermore the participants got to know Remote
Sensing technique and its benefit in Humanitarian Aid. On this occasion the
pupils could analyse a refugee camp along with its spatial expansion, the
differing composition of houses and tents and the challenges which occur via an
algorithm in the software. Moreover a manual analysis with respect to a tented
village was given by counting and highlighting the different houses and tents
in a certain area of the camp on hard copy. After that, the students were invited to try
some GI-Tech including augmented sandbox and virtual reality applications.
In summary the year 2019 can be evaluated as a
substantially development for the iDEAS:lab regarding the modular teaching and
training programme. Alongside numerous other visitors in the lab this year, we
had pleasure to welcome 20 different school classes and more than 30 workshops
from diverse fields of Geoinformatics.
Mention should also be made of the
MINT:labs Outreach Event in cooperation with the Science City Itzling which
took place the first time in the iDEAS:lab in May 2019, the GIS Day in November
and also the visit of different steakholders and cooperating partners.
For the upcoming year 2020, the iDEAS:lab team
is looking forward to appreciate numerous guests from the university, different
educational institutions, business- and public representatives for further cooperation
in GI-science.
